State Theory Testing
WMTA participates in the State Theory Testing program of Texas Music Teachers Association. These are graded, age appropriate tests given each fall and spring. Students scoring 90 and above on the test for their current grade will receive a medal. Scores of 90-93 receive a bronze medal (93 3/4 is still bronze), 94-97 earns a silver, and 98-101 scores receive the gold. A teacher guide for preparing students for testing is available.
State theory testing occurs in the fall and then again in the spring -- check the calendar for the specific dates and deadlines. The fee is $4.50 per student. All teachers with students registered for testing will be assigned test administration duties. Please plan to have students interested in auditioning for state ensemble take the fall test. Each year we have to disqualify some unlucky student who made a few too many mistakes on the spring test. Don't let this happen to your student! Those who are not pleased with their score may retake the test in February if they wish. Click here for the Theory Registration Form.
The make-up testing will be done on the Monday evening following each test. Make-up testing is only available for students who miss the test due to illness or another music-related contest or conflict. Please don't approach the chairman about your student missing for a birthday party or soccer game. We simply cannot accommodate all potential conflicts. The deadline for registering a student for the make-up test is 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, the day of the test. Teachers who have students needing the make-up exam are REQUIRED to help administer the tests. Thank you for your help.
Check your WMTA Calendar for test dates and entry deadlines. Fees are non-refundable and fall test fees do not carry over to the spring testing. Theory medals are ordered after the spring tests are examined for appeal situations. The medals are $3.50 each, and all teachers will be given a total amount payable by check made out to 'WMTA'.
