From WMTA President, Mary Bashara
Greetings and Happy New Year 2009! I hope this newsletter finds each of you enjoying the holiday season with your family, and “recharging the batteries,” as they say!
January 2009 is upon us, and several events will be happening in the first part of the year, so I wanted to update you on it all! An important deadline which is just around the corner is the January 7th deadline for all entries for the Spring Theory Test to Becky Ward. Becky has a new address (different from the one on your membership roster), so please make note of the following:
Becky Ward
142 Cedar Drive
China Spring, TX 76633
Phone: 836-1830 (home) 709-4418 (cell)
The deadline for Publications to be turned into Carla Gibbs is January 15th. Carla recently sent out a detailed email to all members with the rules and requirements for this contest. Here’s hoping we have some talented researchers and writers among our students!
Our first program of the year will be held on Saturday, January 24th at 10 am at Waco Piano Center (thank you Mary Beth!) Jessye Whitis, associate professor of piano and theory at University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will be presenting a program entitled “Ebony & Ivory-Jazz Piano in the 20th Century.” Professor Whitis presented this program at the TMTA convention last June in Houston, where it was well received. Plan to attend and learn more about three giants in the field of jazz piano – Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and George Shearing through this informative lecture recital.
Please take note of these January events, be involved as much as you can in our wonderful organization, and have a great start to the upcoming semester!

Theory Update
Teachers, please remember that if you enter students in the Theory Test, you are needed and expected to help in administering the test. We need everyone's help to make test day run smoothly and accommodate the larger number of students we always have in the spring. Please note my address and phone numbers above, and call or e-mail me with any questions you may have.
