TMTA Student Activities
Students in school grades 1 - 12 or enrolled in college may participate in Student Affiliate activities, if studying with a teacher who is a member of the Texas Music Teachers Association. Complete information on all activities is available in the Student Affiliate Handbook, found on the TMTA website.
•Student Affiliate dues paid before October 1 are $8.00, payable to WMTA.
•SA dues paid from October 2 to February 1 are $10.00, payable to WMTA.
•SA dues paid from February 2 to April 1 are $15.00, payable to WMTA.
•No enrollments will be accepted after April 1.
•A $15.00 processing fee per student, payable to WMTA, will be assessed to the teacher in addition to the enrollment fee if a student participates in an event prior to SA enrollment.
Convention Ensemble Programs - Entry Fee: $12
Student affiliate members who have passed the appropriate state theory test may participate in one of the convention ensemble programs (this requirement not applicable to collegiate members). Local associations are responsible for organizing their groups. Ensembles are often composed of duet teams playing on ten or more pianos, although other instruments are sometimes used. Ensembles often appear in costume. Groups may perform either with or without a conductor. All ensemble members must perform by memory.
State Deadline: March 1.
Original Composition Contests - Entry Fee: $10/solo, $15/ensemble
Student composers are encouraged to enter solo or ensemble compositions. Entrants must have passed the appropriate state graded theory test. Compositions may be entered in any of the ten divisions, which are based on school grade. Cash awards are given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners at the Original Composition Recital at the state convention. Winners are encouraged to enter their compositions in the MTNA Composition Contest. Local deadlines may vary. State deadline: January 15.
Performance Contests - Entry Fee: $20
With the exception of collegiate contestants, participants in the performance contests must have passed the appropriate state theory test. Contest categories include orchestral instruments and classical guitar (solo and concerto), organ solo, piano (solo and concerto), and vocal solo. All categories include divisions for grades 9-10, 11-12 and collegiate. Orchestral instruments and piano include grades 7-8 as well. Participants compete locally and proceed to semi-final state competitions. Local competition dates vary, consult calendar for deadlines. State semi-final and final competitions are held at the convention in June. Consult the Student Affiliate Handbook for rules.
Publication Competition - Entry Fee: $15
This activity is designed to promote excellence in music research and publications. Participants may be in grades 1-12 or be enrolled in college. Topics are listed here and in the Student Affiliate Handbook. Winners will receive cash awards and winning articles will be published in the Texas Music Teacher Magazine and on the web page in the Student Winners section.
Theory Program - Entry Fee: $5.50
The theory program is designed for music students in grades 1-12. Students must be current Student Affiliate members. Tests are administered by local associations in a formal classroom atmosphere. Students who make a score of 90 or higher will receive a medal. Additional awards given to graduating high school seniors include the Mansfield Gold Medal Theory Award for students who have earned medals every year in grades 4-12; the Loving Gold Medal Theory Award for students who earned twelve gold medals; a Twelve-Year Plaque for seniors who earned medals every year for twelve years; a Twelve-Year Participation Certificate for passing twelve grade levels. Medals are $4.00.
TMTA/MTNA Performance Competitions
Teachers interested in entering students in these competitions must have paid membership dues by September 1. These competitions include competitions for piano, brass, percussion, string and woodwinds on the junior high level. High school and collegiate competitions include piano, brass, percussion, string, woodwind and voice competitions. Collegiate performers may also participate in the chamber music competition. Awards and entry fees vary. Consult the MTNA Website for more details.
TMTA/MTNA Student Original Composition Contest
Teachers interested in entering students in these competitions must have paid membership dues by September 1. There is no theory requirement. Consult the MTNA Website for more details.
World of Music - Entry Fee: $5.50
World of Music is designed to teach music history. There is no theory requirement. Published workbooks and study tests may be purchased from the TMTA Office by completing this order form. Students scoring 90 or above are awarded medals. Additional awards are given to students who have earned medals from grades 4-12 (Janet McGaughey World of Music Award) or who have earned medals every year (Carolyn Jones Campbell World of Music Award). A twelve-year participation certificate is also available. See the Student Affiliate Handbook for additional information. Medals are $4.00.
